What Are Jute Bags?

Jute bags — also called hessian bags — are sacks woven from natural jute plant fibres. Unlike standard woven PP rubble sacks, jute bags are 100% biodegradable and breathable: the natural open weave allows air to circulate freely through the bag walls, making them ideal for products that need to breathe — compost, garden waste, soil amendments, and organic materials.

Because jute fibres are natural and untreated, they decompose completely over time — the bag can go directly into a composting environment without generating plastic waste. For anyone looking for a sustainable, plastic-free alternative to woven PP sacks for organic material, jute bags are the ideal choice.

🌿 Jute / Hessian Bags

100% natural jute fibre — biodegradable, breathable, compostable. The open weave lets air circulate. Ideal for compost, organic garden waste, and any material where ventilation and sustainability matter.

Best for: compost, green waste, organic material, eco-conscious applications

🏗️ Woven PP Rubble Sacks

Heavy-duty woven polypropylene — stronger, more abrasion-resistant, and suitable for sharp or heavy materials. Available with smiley print or plain. Not biodegradable but recyclable at end of life.

Best for: rubble, sand, gravel, coal, building waste — manual handling

Why Choose Jute Bags?

🌱 100% biodegradable

Jute is a natural plant fibre that decomposes completely. The bag can go directly into a composting environment without generating plastic waste — making it the most sustainable sack option available.

💨 Naturally breathable

The open natural weave allows air to circulate freely — preventing moisture build-up, condensation, and rot for organic contents like compost and green waste. Contents stay in better condition during storage and transport.

🌍 Plastic-free alternative

For organisations looking to reduce single-use plastic packaging, jute bags are a direct, fully functional alternative to PP sacks for organic and garden waste — no compromise on strength for light materials.

✋ Manual handling

Jute bags and rubble sacks are designed for manual handling — no forklift needed. SWL of 25–50 kg keeps loads within safe manual handling limits. For larger volumes requiring mechanical lifting, see our big bag range.

🏗️ PP rubble sacks for heavy work

Where jute is not the right choice — sharp rubble, concrete, sand, gravel, or coal — our woven PP rubble sacks provide the abrasion resistance and strength these materials require, with smiley print and cord-closure options.

Which Bag Is Right for Your Material?

MaterialJute bag?PP rubble sack?Recommendation
🍃 Compost✓ IdealWorks, but not breathableJute — natural material, breathable, compostable with contents
🌿 Green waste✓ GoodWorks wellJute for eco-conscious use; PP rubble sack for durability
🪨 Rubble & concrete✗ Not suitable✓ IdealPP rubble sack — sharp material cuts jute fibres
🏖️ Sand & gravel⚠️ Jute sand bags only✓ IdealUse our jute sand bags (bunkers, flood barriers) or PP sacks — standard jute bags are too porous
🪵 Coal✗ Not suitable✓ IdealPP rubble sack — contains coal dust, easy to carry
🌱 Soil amendments✓ GoodWorks wellJute preferred for organic amendments (peat, bark, compost)

💡 Manual handling weight limit reminder

EU manual handling guidance recommends a maximum of 25 kg for regular single-person lifting. A rubble sack filled with dense materials like concrete or wet sand can reach its limit at just 12–15 litres of fill — long before the bag looks full. Always check the feel of the sack before lifting, and never overfill.

PE Bags vs PP Woven Rubble Sacks — What Is the Difference?

Not all rubble sacks are the same material. When choosing a sack, it helps to understand the difference between the two main types: PE (polyethylene) and PP woven (polypropylene). On a construction site, both are widely used — the right choice depends on your material and conditions.

🛍️ PE — Polyethylene Bags

PE bags are made from polyethylene film — soft, flexible, and highly stretchable. The sealed film makes them fully waterproof: water cannot pass through the bag walls. This also makes them dust-tight and airtight — essential for hazardous waste containment. Used as bin bags, construction waste bags, and asbestos inner liners.

Best for: wet waste, dust containment, asbestos liners, bin bags, construction waste

🏗️ PP Woven — Polypropylene Woven Sacks

PP woven sacks are made from interwoven polypropylene threads — stiff, rigid, and highly durable. The woven structure gives them excellent tear and abrasion resistance for sharp, heavy materials. However, water passes through the woven fabric — they are not waterproof. On construction sites this is often fine for dry waste, but for wet material or conditions requiring moisture containment, PE is the better choice.

Best for: rubble, sand, gravel, coal, dry building waste — tough and tear-resistant

BreathabilityNone — airtightSome — woven structure allows limited airflow
RecyclableYes — PE plastic recycling streamYes — PP plastic recycling stream

💡 Why asbestos bags use both

Our asbestos bags combine both materials for a reason: the PP woven outer bag provides mechanical strength and tear resistance for handling and transport, while the PE inner liner creates the airtight, dust-tight barrier required to contain asbestos fibres. Neither material alone provides both properties — the combination is what makes certified asbestos packaging safe and legal.
