Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about asbestos bags, regulations and choosing the right product.
Asbestos is a natural mineral fibre that was widely used for insulation and fire resistance. It can still be found in many older buildings including roofs, pipes, ceilings, cement sheets, floor coverings and partition panels. Buildings constructed before 1994 may contain asbestos containing materials.
Standard rubble sacks are not suitable for asbestos waste. Asbestos bags are specifically designed to prevent the release of asbestos fibres. They feature a PE liner, dense polypropylene fabric, an official asbestos warning print and secure closing strips in line with legal requirements.
For smaller asbestos waste such as broken tiles, fragments and rubble we recommend the asbestos rubble bag with outside liner (60x100cm, 25kg). For larger quantities the pallet deal of 500 bags is the most cost effective option.
For flat asbestos materials such as sheets, panels and pipes, asbestos sheet bags are the right choice. For material up to 250cm in length we recommend the sheet bag 250x150x30cm with liner. For material over 250cm bags up to 320cm in length are available. For bulkier material there is also a 50cm deep version (250x150x50cm).
A UN certified asbestos big bag is required in many countries for the certified transport of asbestos waste by road. If your disposal company or the relevant authority requires UN certification you will need the UN asbestos big bag (90x90x110cm). Without this requirement a standard big bag with PE liner is sufficient.
A single walled asbestos bag has one PE liner and is suitable for most standard asbestos removal projects. A double walled bag has two layers of material or two liners and offers maximum protection for sharp, heavy or particularly hazardous asbestos fragments where the risk of bag damage is higher.
Asbestos container bags are suitable for professional large scale projects with high volumes of asbestos waste. They fit inside skip containers and are available in three sizes: 7m³ for medium projects, 17.5m³ for large construction sites and 40m³ for major projects with the highest volume.
In addition to asbestos bags we recommend: asbestos warning tape (self adhesive, available in 7 languages) for marking bags and work areas, black tie wraps (80mm) for securely sealing bags before transport, and asbestos poly sheeting (200 micron, 4x25m) for covering floors and walls during removal.
Regulations for asbestos disposal vary by country, region and municipality. In many European countries asbestos disposal is strictly regulated and requires a licensed hazardous waste contractor. Always check the local rules of your waste depot or relevant authority before disposing of asbestos waste.
An LDPE asbestos bag (Low Density Polyethylene) is a flexible lightweight flat bag in the format 80x120cm with 80 litre capacity. It is suitable for mixed asbestos waste where a larger flat bag format is preferred. LDPE is a strong and chemically resistant material.
