What Are Heavy Duty Garden Bags?
Our heavy duty garden bags are designed for the materials that quickly destroy a standard garden bag — gravel, crushed stone, sand, coal, and heavy mixed garden and building waste. Where a standard garden bag uses lighter fabric suited to leaves, prunings and soil, heavy duty bags use a thicker, more tightly woven polypropylene that resists the abrasion and puncture pressure of sharp, heavy materials.
The range includes bags from 120L rubble-style sacks all the way up to full 1 m³ big bags — covering everything from a single person's weekend clearance to professional landscaping and construction projects.
⚠️ Always fill by weight, not by volume for dense materials
Gravel, stone and sand have a density of 1,400–1,900 kg/m³ — a bag that looks half-full can already be at its weight limit. Check the SWL on the bag label before you start filling, and stop when you reach it — not when the bag looks full.

Choosing the Right Bag for Your Material
The most important factor is not the volume — it is the weight. Dense materials fill by weight before they fill by volume. Use this guide:
| Material | Approx. density (kg/m³) | Recommended SWL |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel / crushed stone | 1,400–1,700 | 1,500 kg stone bag |
| Sand (wet) | 1,700–1,900 | 1,500 kg stone bag |
| Sand (dry) | 1,400–1,600 | 1,500 kg stone bag |
| Coal | 800–1,000 | 1,000 kg garden bag |
| Wet soil / clay | 900–1,200 | 1,000 kg garden bag |
| Firewood / logs | 300–700 (stacked) | 1,000 kg log bag |
| Mixed green waste | 200–600 | 750–1,000 kg garden bag |
Why Choose a Heavy Duty Garden Bag?
🪨 Thick fabric resists sharp rock
Standard garden bags use lighter woven PP — adequate for leaves and prunings but quickly damaged by sharp stone edges. Heavy duty bags use a thicker weave that prevents puncture and abrasion from gravel, crushed stone, and angular rubble.
🏗️ Forklift and crane compatible
All big bag models have four reinforced lifting loops — compatible with forklift tines, crane hooks, and telehandler attachments. A single filled stone bag holds the equivalent of 15–30 wheelbarrow loads.
🌱 Also for garden waste
Heavy duty bags are not just for stone. They work equally well for heavy garden waste — wet soil, turf, compost, and mixed garden clearance — wherever a standard garden bag would risk being overfilled by weight.
😊 Smiley bag option
Our heavy duty stone bags are also available with the 123BigBags smiley face print — the same recognisable design as our standard garden bags. Stays open hands-free; easy handles for repositioning when partially filled.
🪵 Log bag option
Our Extra Large Log Bag uses open-mesh ventilated fabric so firewood continues to dry after bagging. Sharp log ends flex through the mesh rather than cutting it. Ideal for firewood storage, seasoning, and retail.

Frequently Asked Questions
The main difference is the fabric weight and the SWL. Standard garden bags use lighter woven PP and typically have a 750–1,000 kg SWL — sufficient for leaves, prunings, and soil. Heavy duty stone bags use thicker PP fabric that resists the abrasion and puncture pressure of sharp, angular materials like gravel and crushed stone, and are rated to 1,500 kg SWL. For gravel, sand, or stone, always use the stone bag.The bag will reach its 1,500 kg weight limit well before it is visually full. Gravel has a density of approximately 1,400–1,700 kg/m³ — meaning a bag that looks about 80–90% full will already be at its weight limit. Always fill by weight, not by volume. Stop filling when you reach the SWL printed on the bag label.Yes. The 120L Large Rubble Bag with Smiley is designed for manual handling — it has a 50 kg SWL and two easy carry handles. It can be filled, carried, and transported by one person without any lifting equipment. For the larger 750L and 1,000L+ bags, you will need a forklift, crane, or telehandler once filled.No. At 123BigBags we sell by the unit — from a single bag to full pallet quantities.
