Bulk Bag Dimensions

How to Choose Dimensions of Bulk Bags?

All over our website and the website of many other bulk bag suppliers you will see dimensions in the form ??x??x??. This can be a little confusing as it is not immediately clear which number refers to which dimension. This can cause confusion, especially when designing and making custom bags that require specific and accurate measurements.

The standard way to express the dimension of a bulk bag is to list them in the order length, width then height. Please see the diagram below for a visual representation of theses terms. To make things a little more simple most of the bags on our website have the same width and length resulting and a square footprint. This means the first two number in the standard ??x??x?? Format are the same as each other. You only need to worry about the last number, which represents the height of the bag. (This is not true for some of our Asbestos Bags)

Standard format = Length x Width x Height

What is the difference between Internal and External measurement?

When selling bulk bags the seller has a choice of how to present the measurements, they can either measure the inside of the bag or the outside of the bag. Both strategies have advantages and disadvantages. Here at 123bigbags all of our measurements are internal, this gives a more accurate representation of the amount of material that can be placed into a bag however is less useful when considering the storage or transport of the bags. Converting between external and internal dimensions is easy, there is a difference of 2-3cm. This means a bag of internal measurement of 90x90x90 would have external dimensions of 93x93x93.

What is the Bulge?

Some of you may have noticed the apparent discrepancies between the volume and dimension data on our website. For example we state the 90x90x90 bag has a volume of 0.75m³. Traditionally to calculate volume you would take the length*height*width. If you carry out this calculation with our 90x90x90 bag you come to a volume of 0.73m³. However this does not take into account the bulging of the bag. As you can see in the image below, after the bag has been filled the sides extend beyond their paper dimensions. This increases their volume to the advertised number.

Standard Bulk Bag Dimensions

A lot of customers are overwhelmed by the huge choice of bags we have to offer on our website and often ask for a “standard bag”. Unfortunately, in the bulk bag industry, there is no such thing as a “ standard bag”. All of our bags are designed to carry out different functions. That being said the bags we have had the most positive feedback on and our top seller is the 1 Tonne bag 90x90x90. Generally this is the bag they are referring to when an industry professional talks about a “standard bag”.
